Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for selecting a research topic and a bachelor’s thesis supervisor, formulating the bachelor’s thesis task, aims, and objectives, as well as describing the research methodology.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge of studies performed in the specific sector and sub-sector, the necessity of new studies, the topics of scientific studies
in the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Technology, in other Agricultural Scientific Institutions in Latvia and student’s home country, the formulation of the work target, setting of the tasks associated with it. Knowledge about research methods to be used in crop production or animal husbandry directions, methods for collecting and analysing data and methods of economic calculation, if this is necessary for achieving the objective pursued in the Bachelor's Thesis.
Skills to formulate the target of the study and the tasks to be assigned to it, design the bachelor's tasks for approval at the meeting of the Institute of Soil and Plant Sciences and to select the relevant methods for the purpose of a given study and describe how they are performed. Competence - the student is competent to assess the relevance and necessity of the study, to formulate the subject of the study, and to adapt it according to his or her interests and capabilities, is competent to assess the appropriateness of the study methodology.

Evaluation: presentation of the Bachelor Thesis target, tasks and their performance methodology within the group with participation of the head of Bachelor's Thesis.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Identification and definition of the Bachelor's Thesis spotlight.
2. Selection of Bachelor's Thesis themes and head.
3. Discussion and alignment of the subject of Bachelor's Thesis with the head.
4. Formulating the target and tasks of a Bachelor's Thesis, preparing a task of the Thesis.
5. Developing a study methodology in line with the work objectives pursued.
6. Submission of a Bachelor's Thesis to the Institute of Soil and Plant Sciences.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Students present the aim, objectives, and research methodology of their bachelor’s thesis to the student group. The course is assessed with a pass/fail grade.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Studies of Internet resources and other sources of information, independent work for formulating the subject of the Bachelor's Thesis, the target and tasks of the work, as well as the identification of the most appropriate study methodology.
Design and presentation of work results.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Own-initiative work has been drawn up and presented in accordance with the conditions of the study programme.
